What are Fire Cadet Instructors?



Fire Cadet Instructors assist and support the delivery of the Fire Cadet Award Programme, which consists of practical and classroom based sessions.

You don’t need to have a firefighting experience, just a willingness to make a difference to the young people in the community. You must be aged 18 and over to undertake this role.

 What will I be doing as a Fire Cadet Instructor?
  • Assist and support the delivery of the Fire Cadet Award Programme, consisting of practical and classroom based sessions
  • Support the Cadet Lead and deputy Instructors to deliver the fire cadet programme
  • Drill yard activities - Squad drills, hoses, and ladder drills
  • Being a role model to young people
  • Social Actions

Desirable Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of leading a team
  • Experience of working with challenging children or young people
  • Experience of helping plan and/or deliver activity sessions to young people.
  • An understanding of the issues and challenges young people may be facing.
  • An understanding of establishing and maintaining boundaries when working with young people
  • An awareness of safeguarding
  • An awareness of fire safety
  • An awareness of First Aid

Support and Training
  • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) an Enhanced DBS with Child Barring lists check will be required for this role
  • Induction
  • Safeguard Training 
  • Drill Ground Supervision training course – Manual Handling and Health and Safety working with young people on the drill yard.
Time Commitment
  • Minimum of one day per week for two to three hours, with occasional weekends.
Uniform
  • Uniform, PPE and workwear will be provided.



The Recruitment Process

Following the process below no cadet instructor is to start at a cadet unit without a registration form and until their DBS is completed and verified.



  • Starter pack given information about cadets and locations and Instructor registration form to be
  • Start the enhanced DBS process

  • FRS Service Induction
  • Volunteer Induction
  • Review DBS status
  • Forms returned

  • Verification
  • Ensure DBS Process is complete

  • 3 hour session
  • Part of a 2 day Drill Ground Training

  • Form to be completed signed and dated after Safeguarding training.

  • 1 Day Training -H&S on the drill yard with young people
  • 2 day Training - safeguarding, H&S on the drill yard with young people
  • Operational bespoke 3hour training

  • 2 hour session can be done via Teams or in person


Volunteer as a Cadet Instructor



Are you passionate about supporting young people and giving back to your community? Our Fire Cadet Programme is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated Volunteer Cadet Instructors to help inspire the next generation.

As part of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, you’ll work alongside our teams to deliver fun, structured and meaningful activities that build confidence, resilience and valuable life skills in young people aged 13–17.

We ask volunteers to commit to the programme for two years, ensuring consistency and stability for our cadets. If you have experience working with youth, enjoy being part of a team and want to make a real difference, we’d love to hear from you.
