Crews from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service's Llanelli, Kidwelly and Pont-iets Fire Stations recently joined Burry Port Coastguard at Pembrey Beach for a specialist rescue training exercise focused on rescuing casualties trapped in sand.
The exercise provided an opportunity for crews to explore the significant challenges involved in dealing with a sand collapse. It highlighted the physical demands placed on rescuers, who may need to remove large volumes of sand while working carefully to protect and reach the casualty. It also demonstrated the significant resources and personnel that may be required during a prolonged rescue operation.
Alongside the rescue element, the session focused on casualty care, helping crews understand the medical complications that can arise when a person has been trapped for an extended period.
The exercise reinforced the value of strong partnership working between emergency services, particularly in situations where operational responsibilities overlap. It also identified opportunities for future joint training, enabling both organisations to further develop their understanding of each other's equipment, capabilities and procedures while strengthening their ability to work together effectively during real-world incidents.
