A group of Year 9 students from Newtown High School recently took part in a week-long ‘Firefighter Taster’ course at Newtown Fire Station.
Over the course of the week, the pupils took part in a range of practical activities such as climbing ladders, running out and rolling up hoses, learning search-and-rescue techniques and developing their fire safety knowledge. The students were able to develop their confidence, learn new skills and work effectively together as a team.
Fire Cadets
The aim of the two-year Fire Cadets Programme is to enable young people, aged 13-16, to gain skills and knowledge and to have positive experiences in a fun, safe and secure environment.
For Fire Cadets, the programme increases their knowledge of fire safety, so that they can adopt safer behaviours, improve their safety, health and wellbeing by sharing this knowledge with family, friends and the wider community, thus reducing risk and keeping communities safe.
They also develop transferable, practical skills for future training or employment for workforce awareness and social mobility.
